The Grande Mosque - Abu Dhabi, UAE

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Perhaps one of the most beautiful mosques in the world that welcomes persons of all faiths to learn about the religion, its people and culture. A beautiful work of architecture and place of worship that inspires me of the greater place of worship to come.

Marble architecture decorated with ornate and inlaid semi-precious stones, Swarovski crystal chandeliers, and I think the largest handmade woven rugs in the world costing over $545 million USD to construct. This mosque can hold the capacity of over 40,000 worshippers at one time with 7,000 people within the main prayer hall alone.

The Main Prayer Hall

The main prayer hall contains the world's third largest chandelier in the world made with millions of Swarovski crystals. Below you'll also see the detail in the hand-knotted Iranian wool carpet weighing over 35 tonnes. It took 1,200 women two years and over 2 billion knots to complete it.

The outside court is again decorated with inlaid semi-precious stones and is air-conditioned to allow worshippers to stand on the white marble that would otherwise be scalding hot by the fierce middle-eastern sun.

The greater majesty to come

The extravagance and attention to detail were awe-inspiring.

Then came one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues and spoke to me, saying, “Come, I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb.” And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal.
— Revelation 21:9-11 ESV

It was all I could do but think that if man could create something so beautiful by their own hands, how much more beautiful would the New Jerusalem described in Revelation be.
