Lifting up Jesus on your Wedding Day

I’ve never had an opportunity to be in a wedding party before, so when my cousin’s bride to be asked me to be her bridesmaid, I was thrilled and a little anxious. What do bridesmaids do anyway?! Funnily for this wedding, the bride seemed to be chilled and organized enough that there were no major tasks at hand. Instead, she treated us to getting our nails, hair and make-up done.

So, a little bit about gel nails…

I’m not a pretty nails kind of girl; for me, nails are good for picking things off, scratching, and clawing chalkboards. I’m not a pretty kind of girl either, so when the nail gal asked me what kind of Swarovski crystals I wanted… I balked. And then I laughed and thought why not! :)

Now trying my best to bring out the bridezilla the bride, I made a lot of absurd and obnoxious requests, but she was far too wonderful to care about these little things. So a rhinestone cross came to my mind – I know, I’m ridiculous.

About Up-dos

I don’t think I’ve ever had to wear an up-do. Again, me being me balked at the idea of an up-do…the idea of it was way too classy for a gal like me. Nonetheless, it’s not about me (as much as I would like it to be) and so I laughed at myself for a bit and thought, ‘Alright, let’s do this!”

Knowing how clean cut, conservative (in a good way) and classy the bride was, I tried throwing out some obnoxious and outrageous requests.

“Would you be alright if I wore a mohawk up-do? ” I asked. I was impressed; she totally didn’t freak out on me… Instead, she replied, “If you want to, it’s you who has to wear it! :)”. I am defeated.

Anyway, I ended up in a faux hawk undo. Awesome! (Please note studded bracelet that I managed to sneak into the wedding day! :) )

When your mind is on higher things

I was amazed at how wonderful the bride was, she was not anxious about having the “perfect” wedding, or whether her bridesmaids conformed to a particular look or style. She was not throwing hissy-fits and wasn’t having a meltdown when her wedding cake failed to arrive, or when one of her bridesmaids was making silly and outrageous requests. She managed to pay attention to the details, and she was not anxious when the cake didn’t arrive. She didn’t freak out when I threw out crazy requests. And although she paid attention to the details, she did not consider it a catastrophe if something was not exactly how she would have it or was not to her liking, taste or style.

And as I thought about her on her wedding day, the lyrics of this hymn came to my mind.

Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.

I could see how her eyes were fixed on something far higher and more important than cakes, bridesmaids and wedding decor. I could tell that although she was excited and happy to get married, she was not giddy with dreamy “love,” but grounded and in joy with a mind and heart for the God’s glory to be made known in the ceremony. The things of this earth were dim, unimportant, and trivial next to the light of the glory and grace of Jesus Christ, and it was Christ who’s name was glorified on their wedding day.

God answered our prayers

So before the bridal party set out for the wedding ceremony, it was an awesome opportunity to pray for her and pray that Jesus would be exhausted and glorified. We felt it important as they intentionally invited our unchurched and unsaved friends and colleagues to their wedding celebrations, and wanted to give them a glimpse of who Christ is and what He has done through the ceremony and celebration.

I was ecstatic and touched when our Pastor gave a short message from Ephesians 5

Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.

Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. (Ephesians 5:22-33 ESV)

I was so overjoyed that our Pastor was led to share out of this passage of scripture, for it gives such a beautiful picture of what the institution of marriage is all about and what it should image. Our pastor raised the points of how wives are to image Christ’s bride, and how husbands ought to image our Saviour, Jesus Christ; His sacrificial love for us, His sanctifying love, and His nourishing and cherishing love for us.

And the speeches

And when it came to the open-mic speeches, I was in awe of how Jesus was given credit to the growth and godliness of the couple, and I was moved by how much Christ was worshiped and adored in all the speeches. I when I think of these things I am touched by how God was glorified on that day by how His people demonstrated their satisfaction in Him.

Just a couple more shots

Here’s a  little tomfoolery with the wedding party. I was personally longing for some silly shots, but we couldn’t convince the newlyweds to do an ice-cream shot with us, so we had to DIY it with our iPhones.

Here are the newlyweds – my cousin and my new cousin-in-law. Below was the light that shone onto the floor from their getaway Mustang.

So that’s a little about how these two glorified Jesus on their wedding day. How did you try to lift up Jesus on your wedding? Or if you’re not married, how are you now inspired to glorify Christ on your wedding day?

  • I love this! And you look absolutely stunning! My fiance and I cannot wait for our wedding day. We cannot wait to be married before God. It’s funny, we have constantly told people we’re really not stressing the wedding; I’m wearing my mother’s dress; the decor is all DIY, and it’s simply because we want people to focus on the holiness of our matrimony. We want people to leave our wedding inspired and with hope renewed that true love does exist, with the focus of the relationship being completely centered on God.

    • That’s so awesome Kelly! Was sitting with a bunch of friends last night just expressing how if they were to go back, that they would have done their wedding differently and far more simply. :) Looking forward to your wedding post when that happens, and you’re right in that it’s all about the God glorifying marriage and the union that points to Jesus. Love your heart toward how you want to honour God on your wedding day and pray He blesses you hugely in that :D

  • Their wedding was gorgeous and I love all of the little touches. You looked stunning as well–you totally rock the updo!

    • I know right! Thanks Jenna, the updo worked out to be pretty fun in the end! :)

  • What a beautiful wedding! My husband and I really wanted our wedding to be focused on Christ, and have our wedding be a light and witness for non-believing family members and friends who attended. Plus, we wanted to acknowledge that our marriage wouldn’t thrive, let alone last if it wasn’t centered on God. We took a portion of our ceremony to worship God by singing “How He Loves.” We also chose to take communion as our first act of marriage. We also were so covered in prayer by our wedding party!

    • Aww…. that’s so sweet, I love the first communion together idea, I think if I were to ever get married, it would be something I’d like to consider!! :)
It’s so great that you and your husband wanted to honour and lift up Christ so much on your wedding day, hope that all your guests were able to see the greater vision of God and marriage on your wedding day.

Thanks so much for visiting Ellie!
